An Introduction to Last Colour Down

Hello!

I wanted the very first blog post on my website to be an introduction to Last Colour Down, where it comes from, why it is different and a little about the person behind it all (that’s me, Deirdre, but everyone calls me Dee!)

I officially set up Last Colour Down in January 2020, but I have been dabbling with wedding stationery for a number of years now. I’ve always been interested in print design. Even when I was working as a graphic designer in the digital space, I freelanced on the side doing print work for small businesses and brands.

I studied Communications in DCU (Dublin City University), where I specialised in photography. For a long time, I thought I wanted to be a photographer and I spent most of my college years (and after) pursuing this dream. I worked as a music photographer for Hotpress magazine (the biggest music magazine in Ireland) for a number of years, but eventually I realized that I wasn’t in love with it anymore. Design was my fallback option, so I got a job as a graphic designer in a media company, where I designed websites, logos, advertisements and most importantly, print magazines. I instantly fell in love with it, especially the print side.

So, in 2017, when I was asked to design my best friend’s sisters wedding stationery, I jumped at the chance. She also happened to be a wedding planner (and still is) so it was a lot of pressure. I dabbled in and out of wedding stationery for another three years (I know, three!!) before really committing and setting up Last Colour Down this year.

What really triggered LCD for me was my own wedding. I got engaged in October of 2018, and we are due to be married on September 5th 2020. The eternal search for the perfect shade of paper and the right printing method for my invitations was something I pored over for hours and hours. Never mind researching for the dress, it’s all about the stationery for me.

I was always going to design my own stationery, however on my research journey, I couldn’t find anything in Ireland that I could relate to on a design level. My style is very minimalist and contemporary and I’m not into florals or pearlescent paper.  Shiny paper, pearls, ribbons, watercolour flowers…they are everywhere! What about the more contemporary couples? How are they being catered for? That is how Last Colour Down came into existence.

I have big plans from my little business, and want to take you on the journey with me. I’m working hard to build a sustainable business, one that is meaningful and lasting and one that will provide me with the creative fulfillment I’ve been searching for.

Dee
